Dear DaycareAnswers:How do you "diplomatically" get rid of a child who can be "nice enough", but wrecks the whole day and dynamics... with constant shrieking and sometimes attacks other children? Rachel
Hello Rachel,Getting rid of a child is never easy. No matter how you handle the situation, the parents will probably get immediately defensive and stand up for their child and the behavior. They should stand up for their child. As the parents, that is their job. I think the most diplomatic way to handle your situation would be to sit down face-to-face with the parents and explain to them that their child is not fitting in with the other children. Let them know that although their child is very nice, not all personalities meld well and the personalities you currently have in your daycare are just not fitting together. You regret having to let their child go, but it has become necessary for the benefit of their child and your daycare children. Rachel, I've had to do this very thing twice in my daycare provider career. It is not easy, but is you don't do it the child you are referring to becomes a thorn in your side and makes things more and more difficult. Good luck to you. If there is anything else I can help you with, please let me know. Marcia
Thanks for your reply Marcia - I know it's never easy and I have talked to other carers - I just need to weight up and decide if I'm being a "Fair Carer" by keeping the child in question, or by being a "better carer" by implementing more distractions/diversions until the phase passes (the loudness and screaming out of excitement or stirring seems to be a part of this child's natural makeup!), or am I being "unfair" to my other children and myself by keeping this child. I'm taking my holidays to "weigh it all up" because the parents are lovely people/good payers/ collect on time, etc. I just need to think of some well-meaning diplomatic ways to discuss the matter with the parents. Thanks again, Rachel !
