Craft Recipes

Fun craft recipes to make at home, rather than buying the expensive store stuff.

The science recipes make fun times when you're playing indoors. My personal favorite is the Homemade Moon Sand.

Homemade Playdough

This recipe makes a soft, colorful dough. If stored properly, one batch will last a couple of months.

homemade playdough In a medium saucepan, mix water and food coloring. Add the salt, flour, oil and cream of tartar. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until dough forms to desired consistency.

Place the dough on a sheet of wax paper to cool. When cool to touch, knead for a few minutes.

Supply kids with cookie cutters, miniature rolling pins, plastic knives, etc. to mold and play with dough.

Homemade Finger Paint

I used to just hate buying finger paint. Those little tiny containers were so expensive! I was delighted when I found a recipe for my own homemade finger paint. And it's just as good as what you can buy.

Mix the sugar, salt, cornstarch and water in a saucepan over medium heat just until it starts to thicken. It's very easy to overcook it and cause lumps and finger paint that is too thick to spread.

Pour into however many containers you need to make desired colors. Add at least 5 - 6 drops of food coloring per desired color. Store in a sealed container.

Glurch

Glurch is a shiny, soft material that "melts" while the children play with it.  It's fun to let it ooze through your fingers or watch it form itself over the toys.   We use our Playdough toys to enjoy this fun concoction!

In a large bowl, mix:

  • 1-1/2 cups water
  • 2 cups Elmers Glue
  • Food color, if desired

In a small dish, mix:

  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon Borax laundry detergent

Pour the Borax mixture into the glue mixture and stir.  As the mixture forms into a putty, pull it out and place in a third bowl.

Mix another batch of water and Borax and repeat the process until the glue mixture is completely used.

After the finished product sits for a minute in a bowl, pour off extra liquid. It's now ready for the kids to play with.

Store Glurch in a plastic jar for up to a month.

Note:
Borax is a powdered laundry detergent which can be found in the laundry isle at your grocery store.   It is toxic if swallowed so children should be monitored constantly while playing with Glurch to be sure they don't put it in their mouth.

Cloud Dough

(Homemade Moonsand)

Cloud Dough fells like flour, but it's moldable.  A little messy to play with, but worth the hours of entertainment it gives kids.

  • 8 cups flour
  • 1 cup baby oil
  • Food coloring (optional)

Just stir the ingredients together.

Store in a Ziplock bag.  It will last for many months.
