Johnny Appleseed Day

I wanted to celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day with my daycare kids.  But when I Googled the date, I found out some very interesting information.  I actually found three different dates listed.  Upon further investigation, I discovered that the day is sometimes celebrated on Johnny's birthday, September 26th.  It is also celebrated on the date of Johnny's death, but since there is confusion to the exact date of his death, there are two dates listed for that.  It is also celebrated on March 11th or March 18th.

Apple Wreath

The first thing we did to celebrate Johnny Appleseed was to make these cute Apple Wreaths.  It was fun for the kids to paint with the apple instead of the traditional paint brush.

Supplies Needed:

  • An apple, sliced in half
  • Apple Wreath template
  • Red tempera paint
  • Green and brown washable markers
  • Scissors
  • Paper plate

Print out one template for each child.  Pour a small amount of red tempera paint in a flat container, like the lid of a margarine container.  Dip the apple in the paint, then press the apple to the template to make a print.

After the paint is dry, color the leaves green and the stem brown with washable markers.  Cut the apples out and staple to a paper plate that has had the center cut out.
